Who Treats TMJ Disorders or TMD

Who Treats TMJ Disorders (TMD)The treatment of TMJ disorders is best accomplished by dentists who have special training in this field.

The American Alliance of TMD Organizations has established fundamental principles for TMD practice.

The Alliance and the websites of it's member organizations is an excellent place to find a dentist who treats TMJ disorders. I have the great honor of being the current Chair of the TMD Alliance. http://www.tmdalliance.com/index.html

Founded in 1995 on behalf of patients’ well-being, the Alliance of TMD Organizations’ mission is to support and protect the right and freedom of clinicians to practice in the field of TMD within the scope of their care, skill, judgment, and scientific information.

The Alliance of TMD Organizations has been created to represent the broad interests of professional organizations and their member practitioners who understand the importance of effective diagnosis and treatment of cranio-oro-facial disorders.
1. The Alliance of TMD Organizations supports ethical and professional patient centered care.

2. Treatment should be based upon individual patient needs.

3. TMD and associated facial pain disorders/diseases may encompass physical, functional, cognitive, and psycho-social factors all of which may contribute to patient’s symptoms and complaints. Dental occlusion may have a significant role in TMD; as a cause, precipitating, and/or perpetuating factor. Any or all aspects may be taken into consideration when developing diagnoses and treatments accepting that TMD and associated co-morbidities including other pain disorders may be multi-factorial in nature.

4. Diagnoses and treatments should be based upon scientific information in conjunction with the skill, knowledge, and judgment of the providing clinician within the scope of their care.

5. Patient care should progress from initially minimally invasive treatment with gradations of increased intervention weighing risk versus benefit within reasonable standards of care.

6. The diagnosis and treatment of TMD should be considered an emerging science accepting that approaches for diagnoses and treatments may change based upon scientific evidence, clinical evidence. Reasonable standards of care should always be considered in the differential diagnosis of all head, neck and facial pain.

7. Efforts should be made to allow for continuity of care between multi-disciplinary health care providers.

8. Although not gender specific, TMD symptoms and associated pain disorders are gender biased and found to be reported predominately in females.

9. Since TMD and associated pain disorders are by nature gender biased affecting a significant portion of the female population, they should also be considered a women’s health issue.

10. Third party payers should not discriminate based upon gender, body part, location of symptoms, specific dysfunction, or professional degree of the licensed health care provider.

These 10 basic principles were developed by the majority of the representatives of TMD Alliance members.

CHICAGO TMJ Testimonials: Over 100 Video Testimonials listed for Chicago TMJ Testimonial

I have treated thousands of patients over the last 35 years in Wisconsin and Illinois for TMJ disorders, Sleep disorders, chronic headaches, migraines, cluster headaches and other disorders.

In  the last 18 months over 100 video testimonials have been made by my patients and they are available on youtube.  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCk9Bfz6pklC7_UluWFHzLrg

The value of these videos is that patients can identify with other patients who have had similar stories.  Thousands of patients visit these videos monthly and I have helped countless patients as a result.

My Highland Park website is www.ThinkBetterLife.com and it is conveniently located on the Metra line and has Saturday appointments available.

Patients who have suffered with pain for years appreciate the personalized precision approach to eliminating pain and dysfunction and restoring their quality of life.

Services offered include a Diagnostic Neuromuscular orthotic to reversibly. address pain and dysfunction, Trigger point injections, Sphenopalatine Ganglion Blocks, Prolotherapy and much more.

Improving your quality of life is our goal.

This first video is a patient who has been in constant pain for most of her life.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7fQKStzAUo

This was her first visit for a consultation and she now has no pain and is super relaxed and feels great! She has her neurostimulater off for over an hour and it has not been off since it was surgically implanted. If ever off even for a short time she would get an immediate migraine.

When the stimulator was turned off and she felt a migraine begining Janet Travell spray and stretch technique turned off the migraine as myofascial triggers were relieved.

Brittany now understands much of her pain comes from her muscles. "It has been a long time since I felt this good, since I was a kid."

This second video is a disabled Israeli Veteran who has been in constant pain from fibromyalgia for over nine years.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5xUFtuZe_Y

The next patient experiencd over 50 years of migraine before finding relief:

This patient suffered with TMJ problems for over 25 years :

This next patient suffered constant pain for over nine years and was told by Mayo Clinic Neurologist that there "Was No Hope"!

These are just a few of the over 100 videos on the youtube channel.

This patient declared "If you're in pain there is hope!"
All of these patients have rediscovered hope.

They all have one thing in common, they found a reason to have hope again.

Chicago Headache: Patient Testimonials

Just outside Chicago in Highland Park patients with long term problems are showing remarkable improvements in Quality of Life.

The book "Miracles on Park Avenue" told the story of a New York Physician who utilized Sphenopalatine Ganglion Blocks to treat many types of Chronic Pain.

I teach courses to physicians and dentists who want to utilize the amazing SPG Block.  The SPG Block is addresses the Autonomic Nervous System and its Sympathetic and Parasympathetic components.  SPG Blocks can turn off not just pain but anxiety, panic, sympathetic overload form "Fight or Flight" reflex, help correct cortisol levels and offer help in controllling the Limbic System, Hypothalamus, and reticular activating system.  This changes brain chemistry at the level of neurotransmitters in synapses including Serotonin, norepinephrine and acetyl choline to name a few with psychoactive drugs.

I have recently taught courses in New York, Scottsdale, San Diego and have course scheduled in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Seattle.

The SPG block is amazing but it is only one of many approaches to the elimination of headaches and migraines.  It is incredible important to recognize the multifactorial causes of headaches and address them to address all of the issues.

Neuromuscular Diagnostic  Orthotics are used to eliminate nociception into the Trigeminal Nervous System that is at the center of each and every headache and migraine.   This is a neglected area by most of medicine and neurology because the tools are not taught in medical school.  Even dental schools have pretty much abandoned teaching undergraduate dental students to mange chronic headaches.

It is now generally accepted that most if not all headaches have an association with Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction and taut muscle bands and trigger points referring pain to the head.  These problems include all muscles but especially cranio-cervical musculature and masticatory muscles.  Addressing these issues required a trained neuromuscular dentist who can relax and allow these muscle to heal.

The use of ULF_TENS is extremely helpful in eliminating pathology but other techniques include Spray and Stretch and Trigger Point Injections as taught by Janet Travell.  Myofacial Trigger Point Therapy as taught by Bonnie Pruden and developed by Travell and Pruden.

Correction of cervical issues with Atlas Orthoganol correction by an A/O or NUCCA Chiropractor when indicated.

There are many TMJ and Headache YouTube Testimonials on the Think Better Life Youtube channel. a few of these videos are referenced below:
